White built arguably the finest quality, best performing, most luxurious steam automobiles in the world in the early years of the 20th century. Rated at 10 horsepower, this Type D's two-cylinder engine is more than adequate to power a full complement of passengers in its 4-5 seat rear entrance tonneau touring car coachwork with all the luggage which the fashion of the day dictated accompany its prosperous occupants.
It was for many years owned by early collector Ted Jameson for whom it was restored by Lou Biondi to concours standards many years ago. Maintained in concours condition for many years, it recently has been freshened by Chris Kidd's Tired Iron Works. It is lavishly provided with equipment and accessories including Rushmore acetylene headlamps, Dietz kerosene side lights, a canopy-style top and wicker pannier baskets for storage of incidentals.
It has been conclusively dated as built in 1904 by the Crawford Museum from original White factory records giving it London to Brighton Veteran Car Run eligibility where its performance and reliability should make it a stellar performer. Its condition is above reproach, belying the age of its restoration but substantiating the quality of the workmanship, skill and materials employed and validating its consistent care and maintenance.
Rarely seen among steam cars, it still has its original burner and the semi-flash boiler gives it a range of 100 miles on a single water fill. It has fascinating presence, with performance to match in a Brighton Run eligible package that makes it exceptionally attractive to active collectors. |
